Why I love Christmas

A lot had been said about Christmas.  Some like it, some don't.  I've read about how people don't like the commercialism attached to it and how it makes people worry about getting all the gifts for their loved ones.  Having considered all that, I'd still like to say that I love Christmas.  I really do.  I am not religious but I get excited about it.

Here's why:

Because it reminds me of the happiness of my childhood.  Well, I did not get so much from Santa during those years - except for a sock full of sweets - yes every year!  At the time, we did not use decorative socks that you can now buy from the shops - we used my father's old socks!  I remember I'd get the longest ones for me and my sister because I thought we'd get more sweets in them.  Well, we didn't.  LOL.

I grew up in a Christian environment.  Back home, Christmas is a big thing.  I love this time of the year when everybody is on holiday, people get together to celebrate, children are happy and excited, enemies forgive each other, friends and families swap gifts, it's festive everywhere and Santa Claus comes alive once again in the hearts and minds of the little ones!

You may find this post excessively sentimental for your taste but Christmas is sentimental, isn't it?  So please forgive me because I have to write it anyway - I love Christmas because it's the time of the year when I see all things beautiful around the world.  Friendship.  Family.  Love.  Togetherness.  Peace. Things that I wish to see more everyday.

What do you love about Christmas?

I love the joy, the spirit, the ability to give, and the true meaning - the birth of a Lord and Savior.

Merry Christmas, Len!

I feel the same way you do.

I used to have the cynical "it's too commercial" attitude, but then I realized that it doesn't have to be that way. If others choose to be materialistic at Christmas, that is their choice. I now just concern myself with enjoying Christmas my way :-)

People making an effort this time of year + all the lights and merriment is nice. It makes cold January that much bleaker. But thinking of others and being out best selves in December should be celebrated.

Have a happy Christmas, Len.

Awwwww Len - I adore Christmas!! I look forward to it each year and ignore all the humbug people who think otherwise!! I get so carried away by the whole Christmas deal - even down to the commercialism!! LOL! It's not so much the cost or the spending or the pressure - it's more the thought of getting or making something special for special people in my life. I think gift giving means so much if it's from the heart - and what better excuse to do this than at Christmas!! Even just getting a christmas card brightens my day cos I think someone thought me special enough to send me one!!

And I love all sentimentalities attached to the holidays too. All the decorating, the idea of getting together with family and friends and the celebration of a year passing.

Have a great Christmas!

Take care

Socks! My dad had LONG wool socks -- bush socks -- and that's what we used as stockings. Always an orange or tangerine in the toe, and always filled with needed items like a toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.

My family wasn't religious at all, but when I got older I joined our country church choir and loved singing (off key) in all the holiday services.

Now the Solstice has more meaning for me, as it heralds a return of daylight. Bliss! :-)

Christmas is very sentimental, and it means so much to so many of us. This was a nice piece :)

What a great post! I didn't think it was too sentimental at all. I love the image of your fathers old socks stuffed with sweets. It is such a wonderful time of year for traditions, friends, and family. Merry Christmas!

I am religious, so Christmas means a lot to me because of Jesus' birth. I also love all the togetherness with family and having my husband off work for the entire week!

I too love Christmas. It seems people are more inclined to be kind and notice those around them. Generosity is also rampant. And that can't be bad!!! Have a wonderful Christmas Len
